And for this you get paid?

Maybe one of the most pointless articles I’ve read in awhile is this one lovingly entitled, “Viewpoint: The Hybrid Market – Not Better for the Environment“. Of course, we never find out exactly why hybrids are bad for the environment. It’s implied that it’s because they’re not good enough for the environment.
I wondering if “cuz I say so” is really a good reason?

The article could certainly be improved by clearer writing, but I reckon it means that increasing vehicle mpg from 18 to 21 mpg with a hybrid drive-train will not help very much. Depending on the miles driven per year, I should like to say that it could matter a great deal, but why argue?
On the other hand, I found a lot to agree with in the second paragraph:
“Hybrids have become popular not because of their lessened impact on the environment, but because of their long-term affordability. Because of their increased gas mileage – and proven reliability – more people are driving hybrids.”
Were I unwise enough to characterize the majority of past hybrid vehicle buyers, I’d say that they ‘came’ for the environmental advantages and they ‘stayed’ because the vehicles were reliable and inexpensive to operate.
